Has been cultivated.“…and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this” (Esther 4:14)Denominational: Dr. Tillman is a renowned Baptist Pastor and is active in numerous Baptist Organizations at the National, State and Local level. As a result of his leadership skills, his knowledge of and faithfulness to God, he has served in numerous positions; the Midwest Regional Representative of Disaster Relief, N.B.C., USA Inc., Vice President at Large of the Wolverine State Missionary Baptist Convention-Congress of Christian Education, Executive Board Member on the Council of Baptist Pastors of Detroit and vicinity, and is member of Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Society Inc., and the Micah Leadership Council, (People for the American Way Foundation,). Dr. Tillman has also served as Vice-President at Large for the Great Lakes District Baptist Association, and served as an Instructor and Dean of the Great Lakes District Baptist Congress.Community: Dr. Tillman is no stranger to public service and in a short period of time, he impacted the community of Flint greatly; the Flint Water Crisis was his first vision of taking his Ministry outside the four walls of the church and offer hope to the residents of Flint. He and his wife Catrina were successful in making First Trinity the “hub” ensuring clean water was provided to the residents on a weekly basis. On February 1st 2016, Pastor Tillman and the First Trinity M.B.C hosted the ‘Environmental Justice Rally’. As a result, that day, over 500,000 bottles of donated water was given to the citizens of Flint. From 2016 to 2019 over 1,000,000 bottles of water has come to the aid of Flint residents from First Trinity M.B.C alone. This grassroots community outreach approach caught the attention of Actor, Musician, Philanthropist and owner of Just Water, Jaden Smith. As a result, a collaboration effort was made to further aid and assist the residents of Flint. In 2017 First Trinity Missionary Baptist Church and Jaden Smith’s organization 501cTHREE developed the “Water Box”, a portable water filtration system that can produce 5 gallons of clean water in 30 seconds. Today I want to return to talking about the Southern Baptist Convention.First Baptist Church of Jacksonville, Florida is easily one of the most significant churches in the history of the Southern Baptist Convention. Since I have not been at First Baptist long enough to take any credit whatsoever for that greatness, there is no personal boast in that observation. It is just the expression of a simple fact. First Baptist was once one of the largest churches in the Southern Baptist Convention, has given millions of dollars to the cooperative program, hosted a conservative alternative to the SBC annual meeting when the convention was more liberal, supplied a president of the convention from among our former pastors, and—until I got here—has always boasted of having senior pastors who were the best leaders and finest preachers that Southern Baptists have to offer.First Baptist Church has a rich history of investment in the Southern Baptist Convention. When Is it Time to Go?That is why I have been alarmed at the expressions of concern I have received since last June about whether our church will remain in the SBC. The expressions of concern come in a steady trickle of email encouragements, “Pastor, when you say it is time to leave the SBC, we will be right behind you,” and in the weekly conversations with people who come up after church and ask, “How much longer do you think until we leave the convention?”These statements are coming from garden-variety church members that I would not even have imagined are paying attention to the SBC. But they are paying attention, and they are ready to walk out the door.I understand why.I became a Christian in a Southern Baptist church when I was in high school in the 1990s. I have been paying attention to the SBC for almost all that time, and I have never seen this convention in as much turmoil as it is right now. Disagreements about race, politics, sexual abuse, and even the qualifications for president of the convention are all threatening to tear us apart. I do not know a single Southern Baptist who is unconcerned. Every person in my church who has brought it up to me is concerned, and they are wondering if it is time to leave. My answer is not yet.Of course, the time may come to leave. There may come a day when the Southern Baptist Convention is

If you’re thinking it’s hard for you to gather your workers and plan for your yearly VBS, imagine how much harder it must be for churches on the other side of the world to gather resources and teachers, find a place to train, and plan for what may be a totally new concept for some areas of the world!Such is the story of Pantai Baptist Church in Malaysia. They held their VBS training event on June 25, 2011.In the week leading up to the training, Pantai Baptist Church did VBS volunteer recruitment for Big Apple Adventure at First Baptist Church Subang in Malaysia.Other than Pantai Baptist Church and First Baptist Church Subang, 16 other churches were represented in this training event. One of the trainers said, “I was going through the list of participants the night before, and the responsibility seemed just so B-I-G. I dared not share those feelings with my teammates as I know the list was circulated, but they don’t read, and they won’t be at the registration desk. I prayed for wisdom. I just felt we were not adequate to train pastors, so we just asked for blessings to be God’s mouthpiece.”Later he added, “We had pastors coming from Johor Bahru and even Tanjong Malim (north and south of Kuala Lumpur)! We did have three churches that came from other states to attend the seminar. A total of 60 people, from our count, turned out for the training. This number did not include First Baptist Church Subang and Pantai Baptist Church members, so over all, we had about 80-100 people.“It sure was fun for us. (We always have fun when we do VBS.) We did a bit of going down memory lane because we had team members assigned to wear the different VBS T-shirts we’ve used throughout the years—from our first one (Amazon Outfitters), when someone came to teach us how to do VBS, right up to Saddle Ridge Ranch.“I think everyone has VBS fever, but the participants have to return to their churches to share. It is June already, and the next shipment of materials. Listen to Katy's First Baptist Church on Spotify. The latest sermons from Katy's First Baptist Church, Katy, TX.
